Wake up and find Molise

Yesterday I ventured further into the depths of Molise, and once again I wept as I saw so many beautiful villages crumbling and decaying. Bereft of people in most of the mountaintop villages I have visited this week they will soon cease to exist.

The population is in decline, and in most places is less than half what it was even ten years ago.
Money has been poured into some places, mostly from European union projects. However sadly many of these now only seem to be a plaque on a wall or a post. Image result for Eu project plaque

There are picnic tables and stalls for horses just above my house, which were put there with EU funds ten years ago, and apparently, never used since. They sit beside the track which is part of the Image result for old wooden picnic bench in woos the Transumanza, Image result for transumanza
a trail that was once used by men, and women on foot or horseback to drive their sheep and cattle to the coast.

I have stopped and talked to people in the villages too, and they would like to do something but don't know what. As they watch their younger relations walk away to find work in the towns and cities all they can do is trudge to their local shop, or the church hoping to meet someone on the way.

Yesterday as I stood beside a crumbling house looking out over the plains below and the mountains beyond my heart lifted.
An Buzzard circled overhead swooping down to catch its prey. Drifting on the breeze without a care that the village below it is dying away.

Let me lift your heart too, and share Molise with you.............
I know you can't see the Buzzard, but he was there... Come on, pack your bags and come to Molise so you can see him for yourself.

Follow this blog to learn about a different village every day, and contact me if you want to come to stay.
