More to Molise than meets the eye

Another day in Molise and more surprises. It struck me today that even if I took a thousand photographs they would just not do this region justice.

There are so many contrasts in the landscape that can be seen as you drive down the virtually deserted roads you are met by astoundingly beautiful views on every corner.

On Monday I visited the village of Torella Del Sannio, where I was invited into the beautiful and ancient castle..which is thought to be 12th century. It has been in the Ciamarra family for generations.

The walls are covered with paintings by Elena Ciamarra,Image result for elena ciamarra whose granddaughter still lives there.
Although very talented Elena never received the recognition she deserves and she remains largely unknown.Image result for elena ciamarra

The castle is topped by impressive towers where you can sit imagining life in times past.Image result for elena ciamarra There is still a candle on the table in the centre of the room, which makes one feel that time has stood still there.

Exploring the rooms you can still see Elena's piano which she still plays from time to time.
... On summer evenings locals have heard her music drift across the rooftops...or so it is said... although of course, Elena died some years ago.

Perhaps you too will hear it when you visit the village...

Torella del Sannio is unique because although when you walk around the village ducking under ancient archways and meandering down narrow alleys, it still feels alive, The streets themselves want to tell you their story.Image result for elena ciamarraImage result for elena ciamarra

Of course, there are many hilltop towns and villages in Molise and each one of them has its own story
